What is the Programmable Valve Actuator (PVA)?

The Fairmount Automation PVA Series is a family of Programmable Valve Actuators designed in accordance with MIL-Spec DOD-V-24657 (SH) with advanced electronic features to meet today’s demanding requirements of naval applications. The PVA has an embedded PAC/PLC Processor, I/O Interface, and Ethernet network interface that enables the development of distributed autonomous valve control systems.

Programmable Valve Actuator

The PVA is equipped with a wide array of I/O capabilities. The PVA has the capability of interfacing to four (4) analog inputs, four (4) digital inputs, two (2) digital relay outputs, and 2 integrated pressure sensors. The actual I/O capability is defined on an application by application basis.

Packaging

The PVA’s corrosion resistant construction makes the controller extremely rugged—it is specifically designed for operation in environments susceptible to extreme temperature, humidity, pollution, corrosion, shock, and/or vibration. The PVA’s small form factor makes it a very good choice for dense packed military applications.

Local Operator Interface Panel

Local Operating Panel

  • The PVA is designed to include a local operator interface panel (LOIP). The LOIP provides the user with the ability to:
  • Place the valve into local manual control or remote automatic.
  • Manually open, stop, and close the valve
  • Monitoring the Open and Closed Status of the Valve.
  • Wireless download the PVA application program the PVA via the sealable IR Port.

The LOIP and PVA can be configured to be remotely mounted from each other for ease of operator access to control and observe valve operation.

Function Block based Application Programming

Design Pad G4 Graphical Programming Environment

The PVA is configured with the Design Pad G4 graphical programming environment. Design Pad technology makes setting up, debugging, and fine-tuning your control scheme quick and easy. It also allows the device to be very versatile — virtually every feature from the local operator interface displays to the back-panel I/O and in-between can have their attributes customized to fit your needs.

The PVA also supports various industrial networking protocols via the integrated Ethernet communication ports. Supported protocols include TCP/IP, UDP, Ethernet/IP, Modbus/TCP, and the FA FANDA Protocol (which utilizes FIPS certified encryption libraries).

Diagnostics

  • The PVA contains a variety of on-board diagnostic capabilities including:
  • Open/Close Torque Exceeded
  • Failed to Open/Close
  • Motor Over-Temperature
  • Motor Over-Current
  • Motor Maximum Motion Profile Time Exceeded
  • Motor Stall Detected
  • Input Power Phase Loss
  • Input Power Phase Rotation Out Of Order
  • Submergence Keypad Pressure Sensor Active
  • Valve Pressure Sensor(s) Out Of Range
  • Analog Input Faults (Under/Over Current, RTD Open/Short, etc.)
  • Position Sensor Out of Range
  • Internal Communications Failure
